Tesla Semi ePTO: the end of the diesel reefer on an electric tractor

Up to 25 kW from the Semi’s battery can run an electric TRU. One charge. No pony motor. The trailer hours finally match the tractor on a Scope 3 report.

An electric Class-8 that still tows a diesel refrigeration unit is a half-measure. The tractor is quiet and zero-tailpipe. The box behind it is a second engine: a “pony motor” burning fuel at the dock, in the yard, and on the grade, with its own tank, its own CARB paperwork, and its own noise complaint from the DC next door.

Tesla’s electric power take-off — ePTO — on the Semi is built to kill that compromise. Up to 25 kW from the tractor battery, AC or DC, into the trailer. The same pack that moves the freight can hold the setpoint. That is how electric reefer units actually get used, instead of sitting on a spec sheet next to a diesel genset.

What ePTO actually is

Power take-off on a diesel tractor is mechanical: a shaft off the transmission to run a pump, a blower, a reefer. The Tesla Semi has no transmission in that sense. ePTO is electrical. Tesla routes tractor battery power — using the same class of power electronics as the Cybertruck — out to trailer-mounted equipment.

Rated output is up to 25 kW. That is in the band a modern electric TRU needs to pull down and hold a 53-foot box. The tractor and trailer talk to each other. If the truck pulls away while the cable is still mated, the system is designed to disconnect rather than drag live high voltage down the apron.

Dan Priestley, Tesla Semi engineering, put the operational case in one line: why have an electric truck that is then also pulling a diesel engine on the back of it? They are noisy. They burn fuel. They do not belong on a zero-emission lane.

How this changes the electric reefer

Until ePTO, a shipper who wanted electric miles still had two energy systems. Charge the tractor at a megacharger. Diesel-fill the TRU. Two vendors, two maintenance clocks, two emissions stories. The reefer often stayed diesel because the tractor had nothing to give it.

With ePTO, the utilization model flips. The electric TRU is not an orphan generator. It is a load on the tractor. One Megacharger session fuels propulsion and product temperature. Cycle-on/cycle-off at the box means you are not drawing 25 kW every minute of the run — the Long Range pack is sized so refrigeration is a duty cycle, not a range killer, when the lane is planned like any other EV load.

At the dock the difference is obvious. No TRU diesel idling in a California neighborhood. No 2 a.m. pony-motor note against a residential buffer. CARB already treats transportation refrigeration units as their own problem. An electric TRU fed by the Semi is how that problem leaves the yard.

What shippers can put on the report

Scope 3 category 4 and 9 have always had a hole: the tractor might be electric while the box is still a diesel hour. Auditors can see it. ePTO closes the hole. The miles and the temperature hours come off the same battery. Load-level road miles plus electric TRU runtime is a packet sustainability can file without a footnote.

That is the revolution for the shipper, not the spec sheet. Grocery, pharma, floral, protein — the freight that could not pretend a dry van ESG story — can move on a Tesla Semi without a second fuel type. Drop-and-hook still works: charge the tractor, keep the electric box on tractor power while hooked, and stop pretending a diesel genset is “transitional.”
